Raj Varadarajan, Director
Senior Partner Emeritus – Boston Consulting Group (BCG)
Dr. Raj Varadarajan recently retired as Managing Director and Senior Partner with The Boston Consulting Group. While at BCG, Raj was an active member of the Technology, Media and Telecommunications Practice, with a focus on the semiconductor sector. He also led BCG’s Global Advantage Practice in North America, with a focus on Geopolitics and Trade.
Raj brings a wealth of expertise to the semiconductor industry, including the following accomplishments:
- Participation in a multi-year transformation program for a large, global semiconductor player in mobile communications;
- Assessment of the impact of US-China frictions on innovation in semiconductor sector and US competitiveness;
- Detailed review of the impact of government subsidies on semiconductor fab cost structures across the globe – and impact on US capacity share;
- Pricing and product launch strategy for a semiconductor chip manufacturer;
- Prioritization, detailed execution and change management plan for the leadership of a semiconductor company on the start of a substantial portfolio transformation;
- Detailed diagnostic on costs and processes for a fabless semiconductor design company participating in diverse markets, to develop a transformation plan;
- Author of several reports with the semiconductor industry association on the US semiconductor industry, the global semiconductor supply chain, and the impact of government subsidies on the location of semiconductor fabs.
Prior to joining BCG, Raj was a manager of Corporate Research and Development for The General Electric Company in Schenectady, NY. At GE, Raj worked with businesses ranging from plastics, lighting, appliances, aircraft engines and the Corporate Audit Staff, and was responsible for leading global R&D efforts and strategic international R&D alliances. Raj holds a BS in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, and an MS in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He also completed doctoral research jointly at MIT and the Eidgenossische Technische Hochschule in Zurich, Switzerland, and obtained a doctorate in Chemical Engineering from MIT. He holds over 15 US patents pertaining to chemical processes and polymer materials.
